There’s nothing like the early dog days of summer — that magical time when the air feels like warm soup and the weather apps lie with confidence. So when I pulled up for this family session and saw a blanket of soft, even clouds overhead, I thought, Perfect. Nature’s diffuser. We can work with this.
Cloudy days are actually a photographer’s best friend. The light is soft, flattering, and basically acts like a giant, free softbox in the sky. So we jumped right in and started shooting.
And then…
Mother Nature said, “Actually, no.”
The sky opened up like someone hit the “dramatic weather” button. One minute we were posing and laughing, and the next minute we were sprinting to our cars like we were escaping a Jurassic Park scene. It wasn’t just rain — it was sideways, windshield‑slapping, “did someone anger the weather gods?” rain.
But here’s the thing:
This family had invested their time, their money, and their energy into these portraits. And I was not about to let a little summer tantrum ruin that.
So we thugged it out.
We sat in our cars.
We waited.
We watched the storm rage like it had something personal against us.
And then — as quickly as it came — the sun broke through.
Not just any sun.
The kind of sun that makes everything glow like a movie scene.
The kind of sun that makes you forget you were just hiding from a storm in your car.
The kind of sun that turns a chaotic session into pure magic.
We hopped out, shook off the raindrops, and created some of the most beautiful images I’ve ever taken. The kids were giggly, the parents were relieved, and the light was absolute perfection.
Sometimes the best photos come from the wildest circumstances.
And sometimes you just have to wait out the storm — literally.
